There are 57 man-made islands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and to keep the rivers from flooding the islands levees have been built to surround the islands. </span><br />

Today at the DSC-AFRI Summer Science Club we talked about Subsidence and Levees and how we are going to frame questions for next week's interview sessions with the UC Davis and UC Berkeley scientists.<br />
<br />
We are working on ideas for questions and hoping to have a few good answers from the scientists to add to our videos.<br />
<br />
One of the professors who will be attending is an economist, Leslie Livingston, who is going to help us understand the economic ramification of keeping levees working on the Delta.<br />
<br />
What happens to our California economy if all the levees failed and the state didn't help pay for them them?<br />
<br />
We are also wondering a little bit about the structure of levees in the delta and how they work?<br />
<br />
We also tested our main field soil before the we transplant the rice from the greenhouse. We did tests for phosphates, nitrogen and potassium. <br />
<br />
Our numbers were:<br />
Phosphates = M<br />
Nitrogen = M<br />
Potassium = L<br />
<br />
Those are really good numbers to start with this year.<br />
<br />
We also completed Green House Gas (GHG) or CO2 air sampling. We tested the everyday air we breathe at Big Break Regional Shoreline Park and then burned peat soil and measured the air (in simulation of the peat fires we often see on Delta islands.) <br /><br />Our carbon (GHG) reader said the normal air was 394, but when we tested the black smoke of the peat fire air the readings were off the charts at 2,400+. That just means that all of those fires we see on the Delta islands are adding way to much GHGs into our atmosphere. From tests they've read last year out at our Learning Lab where most of the soil is peat the everyday area usually reads into the 700s. <br />

Attached you'll find our students' posts from this last few weeks.<br />
<br />
June 17--<br />
During this summer's program we are going to be making a few videos about the Delta. We aren't sure if we are going to get through all of them so we decided to concentrate on one video at a time. The first video is going to be on subsidence and the Delta levees.<br />
<br />
Our plan is to make the videos no more than three to five minutes each, so we've been checking out short videos presented by other students who have done stuff like this before. We are also beginning to do the research involved in making the videos.<br />
<br />
We're going to get to interview people from UC Davis and UC Berkeley that know about levees and subsidence in the next couple of weeks so we are setting up a list of questions for them.<br />
<br />
June 24--<br />
Today we watched a couple of more samples videos from students who won video awards for short videos. We also had the chance to do some research on levees so that we can come up with ideas how to make our video. We also took a tour of Big Break Regional Shoreline Park to check out the small levee system they have at the park. They have a really cool map on the ground that shows all the rivers that make up the Delta and it have a 3-D type of Mt. Diablo.<br />
<br />
July 1--<br />
Jersey Island Learning Lab-<br />
Today we had the chance to see Jersey Island, which we learned is a good example of most of the Delta Islands along the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. We saw the issues of subsidence. In some areas on the island the subsidence is as bad as 18th feet. We have a chance to walk along the levee and see the rock or what is known as "rip rap" that is holding the levees together. <br />
<br />
We were able to take a lot of video and pictures to use in our video project. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is hard to believe that summer is already underway and we are getting ready for another planting season on the AFRI-Rice Culture Mitigation Grant. Once again we are working with a great team from UC Davis, UC Berkeley and Tetra Tech on the project and hoping that we will open young minds to the importance of research programs to better the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, after all these children are the future of the Delta. You can read about this program by checking out the side panel of this blog. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The <b>AFRI-DSC Summer Science Club</b> begins tomorrow and once we are up and running the students will be taking care of this blog and posting their thoughts, findings and giving a review of what they have been doing. The blog won't always be neat and organized, but it will be fun to see how they are enjoying and understanding the program. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We will try to get as many pictures as we can up and maybe even try to add a few minutes of our videos here and there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
High School students are welcome to join in on the program and we always need adult volunteers to help organize and keep on eye on the students. Those interested can email <a href="mailto:info@deltasciencecenter.org" target="_blank">info@deltasciencecenter.org </a>for details. </div>

High school students, as well as incoming 9th graders, enrolled in Liberty High School, Freedom High School, Antioch High School and Deer Valley High School are welcome to sign up to work on the study. The program runs through the summer.<br />
<br />
Several of the teachers who are involved with the study are offering credit in the program for the 2014-15 school year. (Please check with your school for details). Several students are also using the hours on the summer program to fill in for their volunteer credit. (Make sure that your school allows you to complete senior required volunteer hours in advance of the school year and fill out the necessary forms in advance to make sure you are able to receive credit).<br />
<br />
The first club meeting will be announced in the second week of June however it is currently looking like it will be the week of June 23. Keep watch for details, or send your email to <a href="mailto:rgehlke@deltasciencecenter.org">rgehlke@deltasciencecenter.org</a> to be put on a mailing list for the club.<br />
<br />
We will also be looking for student leadership for the club. Those interested should contact the above email. Club leaders will help with promotion of the club, make up club agenda and work with developing blogs for this site.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Rice seed <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19px;">Calmochi-101or </span>CM101 will be used for the AFRI Jersey Island testing site.
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Calmochi-101 is a very early maturing waxy (also known as sweet, mochi,
or glutinous) short grain released in 1985. It has excellent resistance to cool
temperature sterility. Its pedigree is: Tatsumi mochi//M7//S6.features.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
Since Jersey Island is located in Contra Costa County, the temperatures can be as much as 10 degrees lower than other areas where rice is usually grown. This is the same rice we had success with last year, so it should grow nicely in the greenhouse we've built to get it started. So far we are hearing that the temperatures are going to be a little warmer than 2013, so we're going to be watching the temperatures during the testing season this year to see how it any affect on the rice we're growing.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04843122364870884583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6215688491823065583.post-1319492077372818592014-05-19T14:28:00.001-07:002014-05-19T14:29:27.707-07:00Welcome back 2014...The Delta Science Center is beginning a new season for the 2014 AFRI rice field testing project on Jersey Island this week. Members of the DSC staff and volunteers built a new greenhouse this weekend. Rather than last year's six greenhouse, that could not withstand the island wind, we built one greenhouse that we hope will be work better.<br />

This way we can get a close up idea of how all the rice in the field is fairing and decide when we are ready to take the next step. The next step is to stop adding water to the field and drain it. We will send the photos to our team members at UC Davis and see what they think.<br />
<br />
In the meantime we also did more water testing today. For a look at what all the tests should be showing us, see our previous post.<br />
<br />
Here are the results:<br />
Nitrate-Nitrogen levels on both fields are still the same as last time at 0.0.<br />
<br />
Sulfate levels are keeping pretty consistant, with just a little variation in Field 2 Sample B.<br />
Field 1 Sample A = 160<br />
Field 1 Sample B = 100<br />
Field 2 Sample A = 160<br />
Field 2 Sample B = 80<br />
<br />
Low Range Phosphates show a little variation this time as well.<br />
<br />
Field 1 Sample A = 1.0<br />
Field 1 Sample B = 0.8<br />
Field 2 Sample A = 0.2<br />
Field 2 Sample B = 0.4<br />
<br />
Amonia-Nitrate samples are the same as last week at all fields showing .25<br />
<br />
Measuring of salt and conductivity remains within similar ranges<br />
<br />
Field 1 Sample A = Salt 1540 Conductivity 2230<br />
Field 1 Sample B = Salt 1550 Conductivity 2240<br />
Field 2 Sample A = Salt 1480 Conductivity 2150<br />
Field 2 Sample B = Salt 1560 Conductivity 2260<br />
<br />
Water temperature at testing time: 70.7 degrees.<br />
<br />
Here are the pictures of the fields.<br />

Today we took air samples from our rice field AFRI project. We'll send the samples to our team at UC Davis who will check the totals. We take three carbon (gas) samples from each side of the field to see if there is any change to the amount of carbon emitted into air from each stage the rice is in. We take air samples every two weeks.<br />

There are three main growth stages of the rice plant:</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: start;">
1. vegetative (germination to panicle initiation)</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: start;">
2. reproductive (panicle initiation to flowering)</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: start;">
3. ripening (flowering to mature grain)<br />

<div class="p2" style="text-align: start;">
Right now the rice on Jersey Island is at the flowering stage. The flowering stage begins with the emergence of the first anthers from the 'uppermost spikelets on each panicle.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: start;">
Each individual spikelet flowers for only several hours during the middle of the day on two or three successive days.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: start;">
Flowering begins among the uppermost spikelets and continues for approximately 15 days regardless of variety as the remaining spikelets successively open (the lowermost spikelets flowering last). During flowering, pollen from the anthers is transported by wind and insects to the stigma, which carry it down into the ovaries where fertilization of the ovules occurs.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: start;">
In another week or so we will be draining the water from the field and letting the rice dry out which will take several weeks. </div>

The tests being conducted are testing water, soil and air. The students are conducting their own samples for water and soil, while the air samples are being complete by members of the AFRI Team at UC Davis.<br />

Below are a list of the test with results completed on August 7, 14, 21<br />
Samples were taken from each side of the field and two samples were taken from each side.<br />
Front part of the field to the middle dock is considered <i>Field A</i><br />
Back part of the field is <i>Field B</i><br />
There are two separate studies being completed (<i>Field A & B</i>) because in <i>Field A</i> nutrients were added to the field in the beginning of growing.<br />

<b>WATER SAMPLING:</b><br />
<i><b>Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)</b></i><br />
<i><b>Electrical Conductivity (EC)</b></i><br />
<i><b>Salinity</b></i><br />
<br />
With this study we used a TDS meter: A TDS meter is based on the electrical conductivity (EC) of
water. Pure H20 has virtually zero conductivity. Conductivity is usually about
100 times the total cations or anions expressed as equivalents. TDS is
calculated by converting the EC by a factor of 0.5 to 1.0 times the EC,
depending upon the levels. Typically, the higher the level of EC, the higher
the conversion factor to determine the TDS. NOTE - While a TDS meter is based
on conductivity, TDS and conductivity are not the same thing.<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the total amount of mobile
charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume
of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also
referred to as parts per million (ppm). TDS is directly related to the purity
of water and the quality of water purification systems and affects everything
that consumes, lives in, or uses water, whether organic or inorganic, whether
for better or for worse.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Why Should You Measure the TDS Level in Your Water?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The EPA Secondary Regulations advise a maximum contamination
level (MCL) of 500mg/liter (500 parts per million (ppm)) for TDS. Numerous
water supplies exceed this level. When TDS levels exceed 1000mg/L it is
generally considered unfit for human consumption. A high level of TDS is an
indicator of potential concerns, and warrants further investigation. Most
often, high levels of TDS are caused by the presence of potassium, chlorides
and sodium. These ions have little or no short-term effects, but toxic ions
(lead arsenic, cadmium, nitrate and others) may also be dissolved in the water.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Why does this meter also check the salt content in the
water?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Salt water affects plant growth by actually dehydrating the
plant, which will kill it. The plant will have a burnt appearance if there is
too much salt water. There are some plants that grown in salt water though and
are not harmed by the salt.</div>

<b><i>Ammonia Nitrogen</i></b></div>

Why is Ammonia-Nitrogen an indicator of Water Quality?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ammonia-nitrogen is an inorganic, dissolved form of nitrogen
that can be found in water and is the preferred form for algae and plant
growth. Ammonia is the most reduced form of nitrogen and is found in
water where dissolved oxygen is lacking. When dissolved oxygen is readily
available bacteria quickly oxidize ammonia to nitrate through a process known
as nitrification. </div>

Other types of bacteria produce ammonia as they decompose
dead plant and animal matter. Depending on temperature and pH (a measurement
of acidity), high levels of ammonia can be toxic to aquatic life. High pH
and warmer temperatures increase the toxicity of a given ammonia
concentration. High ammonia concentrations can stimulate excessive
aquatic production and indicate pollution. Important sources of ammonia
to rivers and ponds can include: fertilizers, human and animal wastes, and
byproducts from industrial manufacturing processes. </div>

Nitrogen is one of the most abundant elements. About 80
percent of the air we breath is nitrogen. It is found in the cells of all
living things and is a major component of proteins. Inorganic nitrogen may
exist in the free state as a gas N2, or as nitrate NO3-, nitrite NO2-, or ammonia

Nitrogen-containing compounds act as nutrients in rivers. Nitrate reactions in fresh water can cause oxygen depletion. Aquatic organisms depending on the supply of oxygen in the stream will die. Bacteria in water quickly convert nitrites to nitrates. Nitrites can produce a serious condition in fish called "brown blood disease." <b><i>Low Range Phosphates</i></b><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Why test low range phosphates?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
According to the EPA phosphorus is a common constituent of agricultural
fertilizers, manure and organic wastes in sewage and industrial effluent. It is
an essential element for plant life, but when there is too much of it in water,
it can speed up <i>eutrophication</i> (a
reduction in dissolved oxygen in water bodies caused by an increase of mineral
and organic nutrients) of rivers and lakes. Soil erosion is a major contributor
of phosphorus to streams. Bank erosion occurring during floods can transport a

<b>The final test...</b><br />
The last test is simply to check to make sure there is enough water in the field. Someone from the Delta Science Center committee checks the water level several times a week. At this point in the study keeping the field flooded is important. The above ruler shows us where the water level is at this time. Right now this is a good hight for this size field.<br />
<br />
Already the main AFRI study on Twitchell Island has drained their water. The learning lab on Jersey Island will have to keep this field flooded for a few more weeks since we had so many problems getting the project going this year.</div>

In other news, we are seeing some nice results with the nitrogen we added to the rice a couple of weeks ago. This side of the field is certainly a lot fuller already with the added nutrients. Testing over the next couple of months should be interesting to see what benefits the added nitrogen is making. </div>

We are about to begin our summer testing on the AFRI Rice Culture site on Wednesday, July 24 at 10 am at the site. This day will be open to students involved in the project only, however in a few weeks we will announce a Saturday date that we would like to invite the public out to check out the site and testing of the rice field.<br />
<br />
Right now the rice is growing enough so we can test to see if any of the numbers are changing. We will be conducting weekly tests of the site to see what kinds of changes we are seeing.<br />
<br />
During this past week we constructed a fence of bird netting around the rice field to hopefully keep some of the birds out. The rice isn't going to get any bigger if the ducks that make their home on the island don't stop eating the rice plants. These aren't wild ducks. These are ducks that live on the island and have had their wings clipped and belong to the island's caretaker. Since they are fed grass they think the rice is theirs to eat as well. Hopefully the netting will keep them out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0l0L82-Ix8kv1BOK82SCLp5Rz2cK7qK_zP98Rk3GBX5wPKtSWmgS6ojZaU3wn2FpYhkbSma9OvmXreQSR5af0uR5wZeq5nII_DCybE-2hGx3bgqk2xDmfdj_GIsRP9MPK8WSsSpZNdFMg/s1600/IMG_5314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0l0L82-Ix8kv1BOK82SCLp5Rz2cK7qK_zP98Rk3GBX5wPKtSWmgS6ojZaU3wn2FpYhkbSma9OvmXreQSR5af0uR5wZeq5nII_DCybE-2hGx3bgqk2xDmfdj_GIsRP9MPK8WSsSpZNdFMg/s320/IMG_5314.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We also started another test on the rice by adding nutrients to the water. We added a nitrogen mix called NPK to see if we can quicken the growing rate of the rice on Jersey Island. Since the weather here is about 10 degrees cooler than in West Sacramento County and Yolo County where a lot of rice is usually grown, the rice yields won't be as high here. We're checking to see what the effects on the rice will be with the nutrients added.<br />
<br />
We may not see much difference this year as we had such cool, windy temperatures early in the season, even over the past week, that we don't anticipate a really good growth this year. Hopefully next year's crop will be better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyJ8O36xTKFlG3jkpIIHgr4l9l1OjLbEOgi_fGMTMc3D3qppgpWTs7wHSh-76QmcOAKzkdKS2QiEAPYyViqnvaOQC5SPnuhyx6eTHhuJyfjmnXLOopmAVotwpJkO3xN89_451CSm1-1GBh/s1600/IMG_5317.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyJ8O36xTKFlG3jkpIIHgr4l9l1OjLbEOgi_fGMTMc3D3qppgpWTs7wHSh-76QmcOAKzkdKS2QiEAPYyViqnvaOQC5SPnuhyx6eTHhuJyfjmnXLOopmAVotwpJkO3xN89_451CSm1-1GBh/s320/IMG_5317.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
For us it really doesn't matter much because we are just growing the rice to test the hypothesis. If it does not yield rice before the harvest date we aren't going to worry much, which is a good thing since we aren't doing as well as we hoped.<br />
<br />
We keep reminding ourselves..."We are the Delta Science Center...not the Delta Ag Center." ; )<br />
<br />
If there is anyone with a better green thumb then us would would like to help out with this project we will be continuing with this project for two more years and would love whatever help people are willing to provide. In the meantime we'll keep working and see what happens with this continuing adventure.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04843122364870884583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6215688491823065583.post-80639398794105438862013-07-07T17:44:00.000-07:002013-07-07T17:44:11.029-07:00The Killdeer of Jersey Island

To add to our experiment on Jersey Island's Rice Field we planted new seeds on the second field. The idea is to capture some of the changes in the soil in the early stages of growth. We will more than likely not have a harvest to these seeds, however with the warmer temperatures we should see faster growing time. During the growth in the nursery we did not run air, water and soil tests. Hopefully with this second field we will get some idea if we are changing the amounts of sulfates and phosphates in the both the water and soil. We will also see if carbon is lowered in the first stages of growth. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our only true worry is if the sandpipers will take a fancy to eating the underwater rise seeds. The island is highly populated with the little birds and they love the fields. Cornell Labs say that sandpipers feed on insects, so we'll see. </div>

<br />
While draining the rice field nursery after transplant we noticed that there were several fish and plankton living in the left over puddles. Wondering what they were, we pulled several out and placed them in a holding tank to see what they turned out to be. After two weeks with us, we noted that there are several more fish than what we started with. We are guessing that those from eggs that were in the soil that we brought back with us as well.<br />
<br />
We also found an interesting little creature in the tank that we do not believe was with us before. It is a larvae of some kind. More than likely it is a dragonfly or a water beetle of some kind. It is still a little small and hard to tell just yet.<br />
<br />
We've been feeding the fish, and the larvae, dried blood worms, which they have been going to town on.<br />
<br />
So far we haven't put a pump in the tank with the fish. Since the water wasn't moving from where we caught the fish we didn't want to add too much oxygen to the mix just yet. Eventually we will have to put the fish in a bigger tank and add a pump to simulate the rushing river.<br />
<br />
In the new fields we have seen similar fish swimming around. The nursery was watered with well water and the area the nursery was built on wasn't under water, so the fish are an interesting find. The new field where their are several schools of fish swimming around came from both the Delta water and the well water. From the Delta water we might expect fish, but the groundwater well water?<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="p1">
Groundwater comes from surface water, natural landscape recharge and irrigation return water. On some levels it makes sense that there might be fish in the groundwater wells, but many times the water is filled with nitrates and excess salt, which might cause problems for the fish within the groundwater system. At this point all we can do is wait and see if these little guys grow up and what they, grow up to be. </div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
We have placed them in distilled water so we can keep the water fresh.</div>

Wind Speed: 17/5 mph<br />
Light rain<br />
<br />
A little disturbance in the rice fields today by the resident geese and ducks, as well as a small gaggle of Canada geese also stopped by to check out the water. We had to get a little dirty again repositioning some of the rice shoots that came out and we floating. Not sure if the birds caused this or they just didn't get in tight enough during the transplant. Since we had to transplant into the water it was hard to see through the mud if everything was going in properly.<br />
<br />
Otherwise all looked well out at the site.<br />
<br />
Back at the office we're soaking the remainder of the rice seed that we have to plant in field two. It will be ready for planting just in time for the warm weather to come back at the end of the week.<br />

Wind speeds: 5/15 mph<br />
<br />
Better late than never as the story goes. Originally the plan was to transplant the rice from the nursery on May 15, however we experienced so many problems with wind and cool temps that we didn't get anything in the ground until today. No problem just 5 1/2 weeks late. Really it isn't any problem for us since harvesting rice isn't really our goal. As long as we have rice growing in the field to run the necessary tests over the next three to four months we're good to go.<br />
<br />
Thanks so much to the people who came out today including UC Davis AFRI Grant volunteer Rongzhong Le, Freedom High School teachers John Sierra and Cheryl Ochinero (and her two children), Diane Burgis and their grew of Friends of Marsh Creek high school interns, Ironhouse Sanitary District's Doug Sheer, and community volunteers Glenn Gehlke, Christina Savatri and Joe Painter. As well as Dr. Mike Painter (president of the Delta Science Center) and Roni Gehlke (Executive Director of the Delta Science Center).<br />
<br />
What a great crew and with everyone's help the job of transplanting took far less time than we originally thought. We were only able to fill one field with rice, but it is enough to start experiments. We are planning to put down some of the left over seeds into the second plot and see what happens. Right now we are soaking the seeds for a week.<br />
<br />

The Delta Science Center is looking for volunteers to help us transplant the rice from the nursery area to the main fields. We are looking for about 20 to 30 volunteers who won't mind getting a little dirty.<br />
<br />
This part of the project is essential to getting to the next step of the study, which is students coming to the site to do air, soil and water testing.<br />
<br />
Those interested in helping please contact us at <a href="mailto:info@deltasciencecenter.org">info@deltasciencecenter.org</a>.<br />
<br />
Here are the current photos of the rice.<br />

20% chance of thunder storms<br />
Wind: 5/15 mph<br />
<br />
Saturday, June 8 temperatures reach 106 degrees<br />
Sunday, June 9 temperatures reach 79 degrees<br />
Sunday, June 9 winds 5/22 mph<br />
Monday 2:30 a.m. thunderstorms with little or no rain<br />
<br />
Over the past week there has been a lot of damage done to the greenhouse plastic and not all due to wind. As expected after viewing the greenhouse plastic starting to rip last week there were several more tears in the plastic this morning. The question now is should we add more plastic to keep it warmer in the greenhouses or just leave them as is and wait it out until transplanting?<br />
<br />
There are two trains of thought here. The rice is past the germination stages and the birds won't really be bothering the plants at this point. As long as the weather stays mild and the wind keeps between five to 10 miles per hour the plants should stay in good shape. There is still enough of the sheet plastic to give some protection to the plants inside.<br />
<br />
Although all that is true, the weather in the next week or show is going to go through several high low fluctuations. Extended forecasts are showing days from high 70s to low-to-mid 80s. Then into the 90s again and then dropping down again. The days where the 70s may drop down into the low 50s at night are of the most concern. There are some days that are expected to have winds moving into the 20 mph range as well, which will add to cooling the temperatures on the rice even more.<br />
<br />
Transplant of the rice should take place on either Saturday, June 22 or Saturday, June 29. Once we get to this point the rice will have to handle whatever weather mother nature hands us. Any experienced farmers who have any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated.<br />
<br />
As you might have guessed we aren't farmers, however, for the sake of these experiments have been thrust into this project of growing the rice. It has definitely been an interesting experience and one we have learned a lot of lessons from.<br />
<br />
Our hope for next year, (this is a three year grant), is to build a different type of greenhouse all together. What we can build will depend on what kind of funds we can raise for the project between now and then, as the Learning Lab was never part of our original grant.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The AFRI Rice Culture program is progressing well as far as the seedlings are going, however now that the greenhouses have been up and in the elements of wind and sun for two months we are starting to see some tears in the plastic. This past week the number 2 greenhouse developed a splitt in two places for no apparent reason. The rip did not happen where we would have expected, on a cut we made in the plastic to zip-tie it to the polls, instead these rips developed where the folds of the plastic was from when the plastic was manufactured. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Greenhouse number 4 is beginning to experience similar problems and will probably look the same after the weekend.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weather will be warm this weekend, however is expected to cool off a bit again mid-week and warm again quickly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dr. Mike and I have been going back and forth about what to do. Should we replace the cover, or leave it at this point. We will be transplanting the rice into the larger fields in about two weeks. If the weather holds we will be fine the way it is, as the rice is getting bigger and will soon be exposed to all the elements 24/7. We just don't want to take any chances at this stage. </div>

When transplanting it is important to make sure to have the proper shoes because all the work will be taking place in muddy, wet soil.<br />
<br />
So far we've tried three different types of shoes. Some that work and some that just get suck in the mud.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyZP3gT6h4Mceft6xP53fmSdyOzP_RNO74JSEy7oyZ6ACVLXSNWlEZpwK-LrkU7uIZ8h5902qttkWQMd7uG82qZ_1q6GvBg5LZjyL0p7TSjYpmHadHcAhE4Lo-s39f3ZfmDhdGxRJULDLJ/s1600/IMG_4242.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyZP3gT6h4Mceft6xP53fmSdyOzP_RNO74JSEy7oyZ6ACVLXSNWlEZpwK-LrkU7uIZ8h5902qttkWQMd7uG82qZ_1q6GvBg5LZjyL0p7TSjYpmHadHcAhE4Lo-s39f3ZfmDhdGxRJULDLJ/s400/IMG_4242.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far I've tried three different styles and while some have worked great for others, so far only one has worked for me. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbW0YT7jPxYjYh4HGc3tIZS13CEnYZf1_IYKB12d5d6cbI4S-GCx0HsG8ykVsyXl3otULHzyQoCRs1TrvAjVPiSMNGI_PFOhNBZqmBIamHf6TJsjwlOOx9IvkZjO3KZyuU8UO9h_Yckzgk/s1600/IMG_4245.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbW0YT7jPxYjYh4HGc3tIZS13CEnYZf1_IYKB12d5d6cbI4S-GCx0HsG8ykVsyXl3otULHzyQoCRs1TrvAjVPiSMNGI_PFOhNBZqmBIamHf6TJsjwlOOx9IvkZjO3KZyuU8UO9h_Yckzgk/s320/IMG_4245.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Dr. Mike, whose spent just about as much time in the mud as I have, the rubber work boots are the best. It keeps the mud out and keeps pants dry up to the knees. I had trouble wearing these because my feet are smaller and kept falling out of them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2wj6v6c7GQyWLfa40MFTAO0wjSPPVZTNB5uDOP9C_Xa1oeepNJx56PAj49lEE_v2Dpedg5-2T4l_WbPxfoQzxBCjHubifs5EPgz-ZETX_l2zve0ANc-WzYHNV17Psp5HGNqc-hKEXC2hd/s1600/IMG_4244.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2wj6v6c7GQyWLfa40MFTAO0wjSPPVZTNB5uDOP9C_Xa1oeepNJx56PAj49lEE_v2Dpedg5-2T4l_WbPxfoQzxBCjHubifs5EPgz-ZETX_l2zve0ANc-WzYHNV17Psp5HGNqc-hKEXC2hd/s320/IMG_4244.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rubber clogs seemed like a good idea at the time, however the shoes get so stuck in the mud that you can barely more in them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihV209qY3Hrz3vMEmqwteqjclUjO7LIqxD1EsLvpX9D-8CdNbGlhu7tqTJOAYkGp_waHqvcuxb8j2Q1zBz-HQYsn4ruo2cdTPnz_8wIQQ_R9WNW8ytq1v_07AePQ5HHvs2HwHkyEUFaeI6/s1600/IMG_4243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihV209qY3Hrz3vMEmqwteqjclUjO7LIqxD1EsLvpX9D-8CdNbGlhu7tqTJOAYkGp_waHqvcuxb8j2Q1zBz-HQYsn4ruo2cdTPnz_8wIQQ_R9WNW8ytq1v_07AePQ5HHvs2HwHkyEUFaeI6/s320/IMG_4243.jpg" width="234" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The best shoes, so far, for me has been the above style water shoes. Walking in the mud with these is like walking barefoot. You still have to be careful because as I said before this soil is very slippery when wet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyncAX48rpVUAtyojYnjzgd-nK8mKq5cDaSOFhuEjvD3W_6q6dCf-9SixM1sKfFp1mlkgRKrjibichLjWxGTzn5LE4r7kO6VCtUlFE3JyeddtXv__7hQPWDnPR4TIygJcCMNKlqeVU3rE/s1600/barefeet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyncAX48rpVUAtyojYnjzgd-nK8mKq5cDaSOFhuEjvD3W_6q6dCf-9SixM1sKfFp1mlkgRKrjibichLjWxGTzn5LE4r7kO6VCtUlFE3JyeddtXv__7hQPWDnPR4TIygJcCMNKlqeVU3rE/s320/barefeet.jpg" width="199" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Why not bare feet. For the most part for the past few decades Jersey Island has houses a cattle ranch. There are all kinds of objects that could have gotten lost in the soil over the years. No one wants to step on an old piece of barbed wire or even the old jaw bone of a wild animal that might be sticking up in the mud.<br />
<br />
Anyone who wants to volunteer during transplanting we'll be announcing a date of transplanting in the next few weeks. We'd love all the help we can get. <br /></div>
<div class="p9">
OAKLEY -- Dozens of Freedom High School students have embarked on an outdoors research project to see whether an uncommon crop in this region can solve some of the problems facing the Delta.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
With help from a $27,000 federal grant, Oakley's Delta Science Center is having a group of teens from the school grow rice on Jersey Island over the next three years while monitoring its effect on the environment.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
Although most of the 57 islands in the Delta have farmland, most of the crops are fruits, vegetables and grains other than rice, said Roni Gehlke, executive director of the educational nonprofit.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
The so-called Rice Culture Mitigation Project, which the center eventually might broaden to include Liberty and Heritage and other East County high schools as well, is to explore the pros and cons of cultivating this alternative food.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
"It's a real-life experiment," Gehlke said.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
After signing up three months ago, students will participate in different aspects of the project based on their academic interests.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
Economics students will review data that a University of California at Davis professor collected during an actual study of the costs involved in switching from corn to rice, and then determine whether the change is economically feasible.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
Those more interested in science will take water, soil and air samples; agriculture students will cultivate the plants.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
Others will chronicle the activities on video, which could be used to show other schools what the undertaking involves.</div>
<div class="p13">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
In early April, teens began working on a 34-by-15 plot by fashioning six greenhouses from plastic sheeting and PVC pipes to protect the rice seedlings from wind and birds.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
They also dug ditches around each structure and filled them with water to keep the soil soaked until they transplant the seedlings into two small fields sometime in the next few weeks. </div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
Students will test carbon levels in the air to determine whether the crop is reducing the concentration of this toxic greenhouse gas, comparing the samples they took earlier this month with ones they'll collect after transplanting the rice and again once they harvest it this fall.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
East County's searing summer heat dries out the area's peat soil, and its exposure to air creates carbon dioxide.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
But a crop that requires 3 to 4 inches of standing water will prevent that chemical reaction and that, Gehlke says, would represent a very small step toward meeting California's federal mandate to reduce greenhouse gases by 25 percent over the next six years.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
What's more, rice paddies would prevent the peat from igniting and smoldering underground in a hard-to-extinguish fire.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
They'll also prevent it from blowing away, which would benefit Delta levees that can spring a leak as erosion gradually takes its toll, Gehlke said.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
She recently took a group of students to the top of Jersey Island's levee so they could see the effects firsthand; from that vantage point they could see the marked difference between the length of the outside slope to the river and that of the inside slope, which has been worn away until it now measures well over 10 feet.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
But there are potential drawbacks to growing rice as well. The crop, whose waterlogged environment produces methane naturally, could increase the levels of that greenhouse gas as well as phosphates and nitrates.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
And, although adding a nitrogen fertilizer to the soil would invigorate the rice's growth -- and generate more profit for a farmer -- the area could end up with dangerous levels of pollutants if too much is applied, Gehlke said.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
The same principle applies to phosphates: Some is good for plants, too much is dangerous for other forms of life.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
As such, students will be keeping an eye on their project as it grows, she said.</div>
<div class="p9">
<br /></div>
<div class="p9">
"We're just making sure that by bringing something new into this environment ... that we're not making any changes that might be harmful," Gehlke said.</div>

This weather isn't helping our cause much. It was sprinkling a little out on the island this morning when I went to check the greenhouses. Yes, that is good, we can really use the rain, however these lower temperatures and winds I can do without. We will always have some wind on the island this time of year, but the gusts are going into the 30s and whipping the greenhouses a little too much.<br />
<br />
When I was on site this morning I had to repair one of the greenhouse ends that had come unclipped and replace a couple of the hoops that had come undone. All and all there is still a lot of sweat on the walls of four out of six of the greenhouses, meaning it is warm inside those. The repair I made already had the greenhouse warming up while I was still on site.<br />
<br />
The last greenhouse, which I call number 6, is a complete loss at this point. The plastic is ripped more from the heavy overnight winds the past few days. Even so there is some rice plants inside, so we will be able to salvage those.<br />
<br />
We are currently doing research for next year on how to make the greenhouses stronger, but still economical. High winds are definitely a factor to keep in mind, but also something that the students can build.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04843122364870884583noreply@blogger.com0
